Servicebob.com is an online, on-demand domestic services based start-up providing a number of home services like electrical repairs, plumbing, cleaning, etc. to its customers. Their focus is to provide professional services in the home services segment and save valuable time of their customers. The company began operations from Gurgaon has recently started servicing to Dwarka region of Delhi as well.

The interface provided by the company is crisp and hassle free. The customer just needs to select the job and preferred date & time for it – and ServiceBob will take care of the requirement. The company is getting a really good response from the market and is all set to make it big in the time to come. Here is a conversation with the man behind this ambitious start-up.

What motivated you to start the company and what is it all about?

One of the biggest pain points that is emerging in our daily busy lives is identification and access to quality servicemen for home services in a timely, convenient and cost- effective manner. We seek to provide solution to this issue through our venture where people can easily come online, select the job, preferred date and time – and we fulfill their request with the minimum of fuss. Servicebob.com is an online, on-demand home services venture focusing on services like electrical, plumbing, carpentry, AC repair, appliance repair, cleaning, laundry, dry- cleaning, pest control, relocation, car wash etc.

Our core team consists of 4 members, three of whom have entrepreneurial experience in the past.

Sumit Dhingra – Sumit looks at business strategy, planning and finance at Servicebob. An alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM-Calcutta) and Delhi Institute of Technology, Sumit has 9+ years of experience and worked as an Investment Banker covering Internet and Technology sector. He has originated and executed multiple M&A, PE and capital market transactions across sectors.

Amit Malik – Amit takes care of marketing and business development at ServiceBob. In the past, he has co-founded a successful B2B facility management business and has strong relevant experience in this field. Prior to that he was working as the National Manager for Online Products with FCM Travel Solutions.

Shyam Sharma – Shyam takes care of operations at Servicebob. He has strong facility management, administration and hospitality experience, having co-founded the facility management business with Amit. Prior to that, he has worked with many prestigious companies like Tata Motors Finance, Fidelity etc.

Tarun Lalwani – Tarun takes care of technology at Servicebob. A computer engineer from the prestigious Delhi Institute of Technology with 11+ year of experience, he has strong expertise in tech analysis, adapting new technologies, product strategy and process automation. He has executed over 150+ projects at his earlier venture and has authored several popular and internationally acclaimed testing books

What is the current Team Size?

We are a 20-member team & growing.

How did you hire your initial team?

The initial hiring was done through referrals mainly.

Which recruiting channels work best for you?Referrals/Job Boards/ Staffing Agencies?

Referrals work the best followed by job boards and staffing agencies.

What are the key factors that you look for in a potential candidate?

We look for candidates who are smart, quick-learners, independent, great team workers and willing to take up cross-functional roles. For us soft and hard skills both play an equally important role in our decision to form our core team.

According to you how much is the competition in your vertical? How big is the industry? Who all are your competitors and what are your views on them?

While prima-facie, there seem to be a lot of players in this market, but when you start creating sub-segments where each of them operate and their focus categories and regions, there would be only a few of them we directly compete with. Further, this is a huge untapped market so there is ample scope for multiple players to exist and expand the organized market. As per our estimates, relevant market for our existing categories is around USD 15 billion.

What are your marketing strategies? Do you take help of Social platforms to promote? Which channels have been very effective? Which marketing channels have been super flops?

Our marketing strategy consists of both offline and online mediums. As we continue to grow, our strategy has gone through changes based on the learnings that we have had till date.

Yes, Social media plays a key part in today’s online push. Our effective channels thus far have been on ground activation mediums and social media channels like Facebook. We have also benefited from strong word of mouth marketing.

What has been your experience with paid marketing channels?

We have experimented with several key and popular marketing channels and have seen steady flow from all the channels. Given the nature of our services, paid channels like google adwords have also been effective as they allow you to target queries with high commercial intent.

Can you elaborate on the Challenges in promoting your website/ App?

We have not really faced any challenges in promoting our business. Our focus has been to educate people about platforms like ours. Once they see the convenience and professionalism, they automatically use us repeatedly.

What is the current traction? Can you share some numbers on Usage and Revenue?

We have received fantastic response to our services and have grown rapidly over the first three months. Just to throw some light, we are currently averaging around100 requests per day and this number is set to grow exponentially over the next few months.

Based on your experience would have any advice to new Entrepreneur / Startups?

We are too young to be offering any advice to startups but some of the things that we are following (and hope that we continue to follow them) are:

(a) Keep things simple, plan well and yet be flexible in your plans (b) Set short term goals and stick to them but don’t lose sight of the long term plan (c) Focus on what you can control and don’t worry about what you can’t.
