Give us a snapshot of your professional journey till now?

I have been into computers and coding since std 6th. I have always been deeply fascinated by what computers can achieve and tried to be  ahead of the curve when it comes to technology. I have worked with Cleartrip, Olacabs, and BrowserStack in past. In a way, I was deeply into startups before it was cool to work at a startup.

When & how did the entrepreneurial bug bite you?

I guess, I have always wanted to. I have built systems for companies of other people. I guess time was right to do something of my own.

What were the early days at DoorMint like?

We are a high energy team. We used to work from a small shop in a defunct mall but our aim has always very high and we aim it keep it like that in coming years.

Can you please describe what a typical day at office is like?

It starts around 11 (to beat traffic) and goes on till 8-9 o clock in the evening. We are a diverse and capable team of technology savvy people who love solving complex problems. This means we give everybody a lot of freedom to execute.

Can you tell us about the technology stack used at DoorMint?

We use Ruby on Rails, Node.js, Redis, MySQL, Github, websockets etc. Our development processes is highly automated and we have large test suites to do automated testing before any release. This helps us save time and effort and enables us to release multiple times a day on the server side and once a week on mobile side. We do not have a manual QA team. Technology team has high degree of ownership of the product.

Is there any technology that you’re personally betting on to help you scale up?

Instead of a technology, we are betting on processes. We are heavily invested on test driven development, automated deployment, agile methodology, github (pull) flow and a really strong backend. We also treat our mobile frontends(android and iOS) as dumb clients and push as much logic as possible to the backend.

How are you using Business Intelligence and analytics at your company?

We use data in a lot of different ways at DoorMint. We have online processes for all the operational workflows. We have real-time dashboards that provide us with detailed analysis and lets us tweak ourselves. We get early warning of bad things that are going to happen. Most importantly, we use this data to make sure we are running everything optimally.

How else does technology help your company stand apart from its rivals?

We are very different from a lot of players. We are a technology first company. We rely on it heavily to keep ourselves lean and excel in operations. We use apps and website to take orders. We track a booking at every moment and of time and know exactly where your clothes are all the time. This helps us to optimize, automate and give out early warning in case of any delays etc. We use cloud call center to help us give great customer service on phone.

What has been the biggest technical challenge you’ve faced while running DoorMint?

Technical challenge here is take a highly manual offline process and control it at scale. This requires capturing on-ground data at scale. Idea is always to collect data in such a way that it does not become cumbersome and yet, is gives us insights to help us find inefficiencies.

What are some of the attributes you look out for in prospective technology employees?

We look for self starters, hungry individuals who would love to ship daily. We have a very high bias towards doing things fast. We love to move fast and solve problems.

How do you keep up to date with the latest happenings in the technology world?

I keep up to date by reading Hacker news, Progreddit and Techcrunch

What gets you excited about coming to work every day?

Shipping things daily that make a real difference in the top and bottomline of the company is really fulfilling and keeps us all motivated.

What sets DoorMint engineering culture apart?

We are a flat organisation. We have built a robust platform resulting in very few production issues which enables our operations and marketing teams to go all out. We believe in extreme automation which means we are not needed to make any changes to things like coupon codes, rate cards, new localities, and even new cities! To some extent new products can be launched by business teams without tech team being involved in anyway. This means we automate everything on backend and frontend.

Any piece of advice for techies out there?

Concentrate on the basics. New languages and tools come out everyday but hardcore fundamentals and math behind these technologies do not undergo paradigm shift overnight. If you understand the basics well, picking up any language and/or tool is just a matter of some practice.
