How video games addicts Vihag and Nikunj bootstrapped their company Gamedu.

Question – Can you tell us about your company?  How is it funded?

We are mobile game developers and publishers. We develop fun games for mobile platforms like Android, iOS and Windows Phone. We bootstrapped our startup, now running with the generated revenues. Where are you from, what age demographic do you fall into, and where do you live and work now? We are a team of two founders from IITs aged 33 and 29 years.  We are based out of Noida. Can you share how and why you started mobile game development? What was the initial idea and how has it changed? We have been avid video game players and always wanted to design one. With the smartphones as development, publishing and showcasing games became quite easy, it caught our fancy and we decided to try it out. Initially the response was not very good and it was not as easy as it appeared. Over a period of time we have learned and improved significantly to create better quality games. How many apps have you developed so far? Which has been the biggest hit? We have created 11 games so far. ‘Car Run has been our biggest hit. Ninja Mission, Sane lane and Run Kelvin have also done well in the market. How do you think about new game ideas? Tell us a little about the process of development. How do the theme, the gameplay mechanics, and other elements develop? Our think tank team  comes up with various idea based on different game plays, stories and genres, which are then prototyped. Based on mutual consensus and prospects of a particular game we choose one to move on with full development. Once we finalise a particular game we go through complete storyboarding process. After which Tech team starts gameplay coding with rough images meanwhile graphics team finalises UI styling. When both are roughly done, we start finalising the characters, animations and fine tuning the whole game play.  In addition to that music and sound effects are created that get integrate in to the game. The last step is to add other screens like the home -page, adding social elements like leaderbaords, in-app products, game description etc. These are the some of the major steps, although final game only evolves slowly after a number of iterations in each of these steps. How many downloads do you have across all your apps? We have more than 10 million downloads, mostly on Android and Windows Phone. How do you market your games? -Cross-promotions through existing games. -Through different social sites FB , G+. -Through different forums like xda. -Advertisements. -SEO. What are the marketing channels which work the best? Advertisements and Cross-promotions. Are there any marketing channels that do not work at all but are hyped a lot? Paid reviews. Even paid ads are good for initial pick-up but later on you need huge budget to maintain growth. What are the few things that you wish you knew when you started? -Marketing the game is as important as game development if not more. What is the one advice would you have for a newcomer to game development? We ourselves are pretty new but to absolute beginners our advice would be to be more imaginative and try to create something new (gameplay, style or even a story) and try to keep it very simple. Also keep on supporting it with bug fixes improvements and new features. Only if your game is exceptional you do not need any kind of marketing for it. How do you envision the future of your company? We want be amongst the best mobile game developers. We want keep on improving our games and create that one ‘game’. Lastly, we would wish every smartphone has at least one of our game installed.
